Keep Cool This Summer; The Best Swimming Spots in Duluth

We’re about halfway through summer, and it’s certainly heating up out there.  It just so happens that summers and swimming go hand in hand.  So, whether you’re working up a sweat mountain biking and hiking, or are just looking for a fun way to cool off during the hottest parts of the day, we’ve compiled a few of the best swimming spots in the Duluth area.  Of course, if you’d rather not get your feet wet, you can always head downtown and hit up one of Duluth’s wonderful breweries for a cold pint of our best beer.  Whatever it is you plan to do, make sure you book your room at the A.G. Swimming in Duluth

The Duluth area has been blessed with a number of lakes, rivers, and streams worthy of a cool dip on a hot summer day.  Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake, is of course the most obvious destination for a little afternoon swim.  And it should definitely be on your list, too.  The waters are definitely cold and refreshing, especially after a long hike.  Here are some of our favorites on the shores of Lake Superior:

• One of the most popular swimming spots on Lake Superior is Brighton Beach.  It’s a popular place during the summer, and thanks to its long and narrow shape, you can easily find a spot to yourself.
• Another popular place on Lake Superior is Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum (aka the Cribs), near Canal Park.
• By far, one of the most beautiful places to swim in Duluth is Park Point Beach.

The cold waters of Lake Superior aren’t for everyone, though.  If you’re looking for something a little more unique, or maybe just less frigid, here are a few ideas:

• The French River, which leads into Lake Superior, is a popular river for swimmers during the summer.  One of the pools here even has a rope swing.
• Amnicon Falls in Superior has multiple swimming holes.  Some of them are deep, and all of them are surrounded by the rocky ledges of the falls.
• Outside the proper city limits of Superior, you’ll find beautiful town of Lake Nebagamon.  Besides the shops and restaurants and other attractions, you’ll find a wonderful public beach and swimming.
• Lester River in Lester Park is the swimming hole of choice for many of Duluth’s residents.
• Sucker River is also great for swimming. If you walk under the Old Highway 61 bridge and the North Shore Scenic Railway Bridge and head upriver, you’ll find a series of 3 pools.  They’re like 3 tubs in the middle of the river, and make for an excellent mid-afternoon swim.
• Keene Creek, which is located along the Superior Hiking Trail, is a quiet and peaceful place to swim or relax in the afternoon.  Find the ruins of an old stone pump house, and you’ll have yourself a pretty great swimming hole.
• Amity Creek on Seven Bridges Road, has been a popular destination for years.  This is the location of the famed “deeps” cliff-jumping spot, which is quite dangerous.  However, under the 6th bridge there’s a shallow spot that’s great for swimming.
