Tour Duluth’s Split Rock Lighthouse

There are quite a few “must-see” attractions along Minnesota’s beautiful North Shore. Split Rock Lighthouse

The Split Rock Lighthouse near Duluth’s North Shore was built in 1910, after multiple shipwrecks occurred during a  powerful 1905 storm.  Since then, it has become known as one of Minnesota’s most famous landmarks, standing tall on a cliff, overlooking the rocky shores of Lake Superior.  In fact, the Split Rock Lighthouse is considered to be one of America’s best-preserved and most recognized lighthouses.  The Lighthouse ceased operations in 1969, but in 1976 was turned over to the Minnesota Historical Society and turned into a National Historic Landmark in 2011.

Today, visitors can climb the lighthouse, take a hike in the area, listen to the beautiful sounds of the foghorn, browse the lighthouse exhibits, and take incredible photos of this beautiful landmark.  There are guided tours that leave from the visitor center throughout the day, or you can meander around by yourself as well.  The Split Rock Lighthouse State Park in the adjacent area features 14 miles of hiking, biking, snowshoe and cross-country ski trails along the lakeshore and through the northern forest.  It’s an incredible place to witness the fall color changes if possible, and is a favorite for amateur and professional photographers alike.  The adjacent shoreline is also a beautiful and popular places for paddlers to dip their oars into the water.
